AI and OCR Processing Notice
This is a friendly, plain-English explanation of how UnlockFocus uses AI (to create quiz questions) and OCR (to read text from a photo). We want you to feel in control.
AI quiz generation
It’s optional. UnlockFocus never uses AI unless you ask it to.
You consent each time. When you tap Generate quiz (AI), we show a consent prompt first. AI only runs after you confirm.
Only one note at a time. When you confirm, only the single note you selected is sent — nothing else. Your other notes, your blocked apps and your progress are not included.
Where it goes. The note text travels over an encrypted (HTTPS) connection to our Supabase Edge Function, which passes it to our AI provider, OpenAI, to generate questions. The AI key stays on our server and is never inside the app.
We don’t send it anywhere automatically. No background uploads. No “always-on” AI.
A local option exists. If AI is turned off, unavailable, or you’d rather keep everything on your phone, UnlockFocus can generate a simpler quiz on your device instead. You can rely on this local fallback at any time.
Please don’t include sensitive information
Because AI processing involves sending text to a third-party provider, please don’t put sensitive personal information in notes you send to AI — for example, passwords, financial details, health information, or other people’s private data. Keep AI notes to study material.
About AI accuracy
AI-generated questions and answers can be wrong or incomplete. Always double-check anything important. AI output is a study aid, not a source of truth.
Photo scanning (OCR)
It runs on your device. When you scan a note from a photo, the text is read locally using Apple’s Vision framework. Your image is not uploaded.
You pick the photo. You choose a single image using the standard iOS photo picker. UnlockFocus does not browse or access your whole photo library.
What happens to the scanned text. The extracted text becomes a note on your device. It stays local unless you sign in (which syncs it to your private account) or you choose to send that note to AI.
A tip. Since OCR turns pictures into text you might later send to AI, avoid scanning documents that contain sensitive personal information.
Your controls
- Use UnlockFocus fully without ever using AI.
- Use the local quiz to keep everything on your device.
- Delete any note at any time.
- Delete all local data from Settings → Privacy.
